Standing with Survivors of Sexual Abuse

Bay Area Legal Aid is saddened by recent reports of allegations that Cesar Chavez engaged in abusive sexual behavior with women and minors during his time as President of the United Farm Workers of America (UFW).

Our foremost concern is with those who have been harmed. As legal advocates for survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, and human trafficking, we are guided by a commitment to center survivors—their safety, dignity, and right to be heard.

Supporting survivors is central to our mission. Through trauma-informed legal advocacy, we assist individuals in obtaining restraining orders, securing safe housing, accessing public benefits, and building the stability needed to move forward.

We also recognize the profound legacy of the farmworker movement and the leadership of Latino and Filipino communities in advancing civil rights. Acknowledging the experiences of those coming forward today does not diminish that legacy; rather, it reflects a continued commitment to truth, accountability, and justice within all movements.

We remain steadfast in our commitment to advancing safety, stability, and justice for survivors and the communities we serve.
