Oakland City Attorney Launches Housing Justice Initiative and Know Your Rights Campaign

October 22, 2020: Today Oakland City Attorney Barbara Parker announced the launch of the Housing Justice Initiative. Building on the work of the City Attorney’s office to protect tenant rights during the pandemic against illegal self-help evictions, lockouts and utility shutoffs, and other abuses that threaten renters’ ability to safely shelter in place, the HJI will work to assist even more tenants through litigation, policy efforts, and public education campaigns.

As part of the HJI, a citywide Know Your Rights campaign will disseminate materials in English, Spanish, Vietnamese, and Chinese to help tenants self-advocate and locate legal and other resources. Bay Area Legal Aid is excited to be part of the Know Your Rights campaign, along with East Bay Community Law Center, Centro Legal de la Raza, Eviction Defense Center, Housing and Economic Rights Advocates, Family Violence Law Center, and Public Rights Project.
