Celebrating Transgender Day of Visibility

March 31st marks Transgender Day of Visibility, an international day to celebrate the accomplishments of transgender, nonbinary, and gender nonconforming people, and to recognize and face the work that remains to create safety, equality, inclusion and power for individuals and communities across the full spectrum of gender identities and forms of gender expression. In housing, healthcare, access to public benefits, equal accommodation in education, family law, and a range of other legal issues, trans and nonbinary people continue to face barriers, oppression, and organized social violence as they seek to exercise their rights. We take this day to affirm that BayLegal’s practice will continue to deepen and strengthen as a resource to fight back against these forces and advocate for our transgender clients and communities. We also reaffirm that our transgender, nonbinary and gender nonconforming colleagues, friends, family members and loved ones are leaders and guides for us in this process, and that we will continue to listen for their voices in all of our discussions of equal justice, and to lift up the voices of BIPOC transgender people who have too often struggled for liberation with few allies and with little visibility in cultural images of trans identity.

Finally, at a time when cynical attacks on transgender youth are mobilized for political gain, it is particularly important that we say to the young people whom we represent and advise, along with those in our families and communities: We see you, we hear you, and we stand with you—today and every day.

While we should look to transgender, nonbinary and gender nonconforming people to lead, cis people should carry the burden of educating themselves. Please use these Transgender Day of Visibility resources, observances and celebrations as a start to your education journey :
