BayLegal’s Observance of Cesar Chavez Day 2022
In keeping with both our longstanding policy and our commitment to celebrate and support the self-determination struggles of Black and Brown communities, workers, poor people and those excluded from institutional power, BayLegal offices and phone lines will be closed tomorrow, March 31, in observance of Cesar Chavez Day.
During the day of observance, BayLegal would like to highlight a few words of Cesar Chavez in addition to the quote above, which has focused our observance in past years and which centers the responsibility of institutions. This reminder of responsibilities—of our responsibilities—is always welcome and always needed. However, we know that such responsibility only takes on real force and real permanence when it is pushed forward by historically oppressed peoples making liberatory change on their own behalf. In Chavez’s words:
Once social change begins, it cannot be reversed. You cannot un-educate the person who has learned to read. You cannot humiliate the person who feels pride. You cannot oppress the people who are not afraid anymore.
