BayLegal Attorneys on Guaranteed Basic Income (GBI) Programs in the Daily Journal

We are proud to announce publication in the Daily Journal of an informative overview of the recent surge of Guaranteed Basic Income (GBI) programs in California. BayLegal attorneys Jessica Mark (Supervising Attorney – Economic Justice) and Raegan Joern (Managing Attorney – San Francisco office) review the positive indications of GBI’s effectiveness as an anti-poverty strategy, and provide crucial background information on areas in which California’s legal and regulatory landscape has made it possible for GBI to work alongside existing public benefits programs without detriment to eligibility, and areas in which state and federal benefits programs continue to pose significant barriers to integration with GBI.

BayLegal has been working over the past 5 years to provide technical assistance to program providers and GBI recipients in several Basic Income pilot programs, advising on program designs that minimize risk to public benefits enrollment and eligibility, and counseling individual recipients on their options. This emerging strategic area of work for BayLegal will soon have its own page on our website, with program outcome updates and news on the evolving landscape of GBI and public benefits. Watch for an announcement later this month!
