Bay Area Legal Aid’s Tenant Rights Initiatives in Alameda County

Supporting a Tenant’s Sobriety

BayLegal frequently advocates for tenants in Alameda County seeking reasonable accommodations from landlords and property managers. Our advocacy helps low-income renters access services and changes to their housing that support their health, provide accessibility for a disability, or support their safety as a survivor of violence.

In one recent case, our housing attorneys represented a client who was in recovery, but whose housing was next to a unit where other tenants were using drugs. This environment was a threat to his sobriety and thus to his physical and mental health. The client’s BayLegal attorney requested a reasonable accommodation and the landlord agreed to move him to a different unit and put him on the waitlist to transfer to a different apartment complex.
